![]() With the purlin/bracing installed, the long rafter span would be broken into two shorter spans, thus allowing the rafter to carry additional load.īefore you decide on lumber sizing and span, consult your local building code officials to determine design loads for your area. You can break up a long span of rafters by installing a purlin and bracing on the underside. When calculating the span of joists or rafters, use the horizontal distance between vertical supports. The number 1 grade material is more expensive than the #2 grade, but if you can use fewer or smaller number 1 grade joists or rafters in your design, you may actually save money.ĭepending on the availability and cost of various size framing materials, it may be more economical to use larger joists or rafters in your design because you can typically use fewer of them. For example, you can span a #1 grade (no knots) southern yellow pine joist a greater distance than a #2 grade of the same species (with knots). ![]() The lengths and sizes of joists vary depending on the species and quality of the lumber used. To calculate maximum spans of additional species of lumber, use the Span Calculator or the Span Tables for Joists and Rafters on the American Wood Council website.Ĭonsiderations when using the Rafter and Joist Span Tables Contact your local building code officials to determine the building code for your area. Weigh all of the elements when designing wood structures. Some areas have wind and seismic conditions. The span is NOT the distance between the supporting wall and the peak of the roof measured along the diagonal. For example, some localities get large amounts of snow, whereas others get none. Rafter span: this is the distance between the supporting wall and the centre of the roof measured horizontally. Where access to the roof is provided in addition to that necessary for cleaning and repair, the imposed uniformly distributed load should be taken as a minimum of 1.50 kN/m².Before determining the maximum spans for joists and rafters, you must know the load requirements for your region. The imposed load should be calculated in accordance with BS 6399:Part 3:1988 Code of practice for imposed roof loads, as a rule of thumb for altitudes not exceeding 100m you can use a uniformly distributed load of 0.75 kN/m² and for most other areas exceeding 100m but not exceeding 200m you can use 1 kN/m², for parts of Scotland, Pennines, North East England and heights over 200m you will need to refer to BS 6399 Part 3. Joists are to have minimum end bearing of 40mm. Wane as allowed in BS 4978:2007+A2:2017 is permitted in all sections included in these span tables. ![]() Holes drilled at the neutral axis (centre line) are not to exceed 0.25 of the depth of a joist and are not to be less than three diameters (centre to centre) apart and are to be located between 0.25 and 0.4 of the span from the support. Notches are not to exceed 0.125 of the depth of the joist and are to be located between 0.07 and 0.25 of the span from the support. Timber to be covered, these span tables do not apply to timber which is fully exposed to the elements. These span tables apply only to flat roof and roof with a slope of up to 10 degrees. If insulation is placed on top of the flat roof joists and as such the joists are not fastened to the boarding above, the depth to breadth ratio of the joists should not exceed a ratio of 4 to 1. The dead loads shown at the top of span table above do not include the self weight of the joists, however, the joist self weights are included (in addition to the dead loads) in the calculations used to determine permissble clear spans. The allowable clear spans have been calculated in accordance with BS 5268-2:2002 Structural use of timber - Part 2: Code of practice for permissible stress design, materials and workmanship and BS 5268-7.2:1989 Structural use of timber - Section 7.2 Joists for flat roofs. ![]() * Boarding to be fastened on top of flat roof joists with a depth to width ratio greater than 4 Dead load per square metre (in kN/m²) supported by joistsĬentre-to-centre spacing of joists (in mm) ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are having problems with your game, please search this knowledge base or contact us for product support. ![]() Live and snow loads vary from 10 to 70psf with dead loads of 10 and 20psf and deflections of L/∆=180 and L/∆=240.Īnother important factor is location. Additional factors include slope, eave and rake overhangs, roof tie-downs, rafter support bracing, collar ties, ridge connection, roof openings, ventilation, and roof finish. Roof rafter spacing requirements include rafter span, live and dead loads on the roof, deflection, wind and snow loads, wood species, grade, rafter size and thickness, and whether a ceiling will be attached or not. The most current IRC, published in 2021, along with previous editions, provides rafter span and spacing tables for different variables in Chapter 8. The International Residential Building Code (IRC), which is the basis of most building codes in North America, identifies the standard spacing between rafters as 12”, 16”, 19.2”, and 24” on center. So, always check the prescriptive code tables, or with a Structural Engineer before building. Thicker dimensional lumber, such as 2x10s and 2x12s can span further at 24” centers than 2x4s or 2圆s at 12” spacing for comparable wood species, grade, and load variables. The greater the space between rafters, the shorter the distance they can span. Rafter joist spacing is only one aspect of roof design and building that affects the span, along with load variables, wood species, and grade. The typical on-center spacing, according to the International Residential Building Code (IRC), is 12”, 16”, 19.2”, and 24”, which means the actual space between the rafters is 10.5”, 14.5”, 17.7”, and 22.5”. It is measured from the center of one rafter to the center of the next, also known as ‘on-center’, which makes it easier to determine the number of rafters based on the building’s length. Rafter spacing is the distance between parallel rafters or roof joists. How to Calculate Roof Rafters: How Many Rafters Do I Need?.Our goal is to provide a complete guide for sizing and spacing rafters for your projects. We’ll discuss 16” and 24” spacing, how to calculate the number of rafters required, 19.2” spacing, and the spacing when using metal roofing and for lean-to and porch roofs. In this guide, we’ll explain rafter spacing, code requirements, roof rafter span tables, and rafter spacing calculators. ![]() The wider the space between rafters often results in rafters of greater depth too. Depending on all contributing factors though, 16” and 24” are commonly used for most buildings. Standard industry roof rafter spacing is 12”, 16”, 19.2”, and 24” on-center, however other spacing may be used by a Structural Engineer. Plus, you have to select the correct rafter spacing to span the distance based on all the factors that affect your design. You have to consider live, dead, wind, and snow loads, select the correct species, grade, and dimension of lumber for the rafter span, and decide if there will be a ceiling or loft supported by the rafters. Designing and building a roof for a shed, porch, cabin, garage, or home can be a daunting task. ![]() ![]() Infographics are Easy to Share on Social Media Once they have a sense of the big picture and overall idea, they can dig into the details on a video, manual, or live presentation.
